- Your typical PC async serial port has a total of eight signals plus
- ground, which leaves many unused pins on the 25-pin connector and
- perfectly fits the 9-pin one. So yes, you can run an external modem on a
- "small" port by using an appropriate cable or adapter.

- (I wouldn't be surprised if there are 25<->9-pin adapters around that
- only connect the absolute minimum number of wires required to make a
- mouse work and don't work with a modem. Shop carefully.)
